Buddha Purnima, one of the most significant Buddhist festivals, is observed every year on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Vaisakha. On this day Gautam Buddha’s followers partake in celebrations and offer prayers, meditate and engage in acts of kindness. The day it also called Thrice Blessed Festival as it is believed that on this day, three important events of Buddha’s life took place – his birth, his attaining enlightenment, and his death. Gautama Buddha’s birth name was Siddhartha Gautama was an ascetic and spiritual teacher who lived in South Asia during the 6th or 5th century BC. Born in Lumbini (Nepal), he was born in a royal household of the Shakya clan, amid all the comforts but renounced his home life to live as a wandering ascetic. Gautam Buddha founded Buddhism, a spiritual tradition and philosophy focused on overcoming suffering and attaining enlightenment through ethical living, meditation, and wisdom. Also celebrated as Vesak, Vaishaka and Buddha’s birthday, on this day Buddhists reflect on Buddha’s teachings, and promote peace and compassion.
