The wait is over! The ‘Nayakan’ duo, Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, joined forces after 38 years for ‘Thug Life’ and now, the film has released in theatres across the world. The emotional gangster drama, also featuring Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Joju Geroge, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami and Nasser, among others, had an early release in the US and Dubai with limited shows. In India, the film will be screened in theatres at 9 am.
Ahead of its release, ‘Thug Life’, was embroiled in a major controversy after Haasan’s ‘Kannada was born out of Tamil’ remark, which he made at the film’s audio launch. This allegedly hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas, who protested against the actor and the film. Result: ‘Thug Life’ will not release in Karnataka.
While this may pose around Rs 10-15 crore loss for Kamal Haasan, actor and producer of ‘Thug Life’, the actor is okay with going ahead with his decision as he was not ready to apologise for his remarks.
That said, ‘Thug Life’ is one of the most anticipated films of this year from Tamil cinema – for it marks the reunion of the iconic duo – Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan, its star-studded cast and AR Rahman’s scintillating music. The film has already collected Rs 13.89 crore with blocked seats through pre-sales. As trade experts predicted, ‘Thug Life’ is expected to smash box office records at the worldwide box office.
