‘Nice to come back in and make an impact’

England bowler Luke Wood after being named player-of-the-match: “Like I said before, I have not been in the team for year and half to two years so nice to come back in and make an impact.

“[There is] always a bit of nerves around coming back in. It [taking a wicket first ball] settles you down and gives you confidence. We discussed as a bowling unit about what was effective. Pretty clear that slower balls and mixing up to these guys was the way to go.

“It is nice to win any series, especially on the back of the ODIs to keep a bit of momentum going.”

‘I thought they were 30 runs short’

England captain Harry Brook speaking to Sky Sports: “Great start in the T20s from the boys. We had a lot of fun out there. They had a very good finish. We stuck to our plans through the middle really well. They didn’t get away.

“We had a discussion before going out to bat that it was only a matter of a couple of big overs. We chased the scored beautifully. It was a very good performance.

“We have a lot of depth. Small boundaries here, we always felt they were under par by 30 runs. It gives us great confidence having Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton and Will Jacks at five, six and seven. The top order can go all out blazing.

“Woody started beautifully today. To get a wicket first ball set the tone. The middle period with the spinners, the game didn’t get away from us. To have the couple of overs there let us get away with the big over at the end.

“Like I say I thought they were 30 runs short.”

‘We have to try and bounce back’

West Indies captain Shai Hope: “I thought we were a few runs short, with the dimensions and the pitch being a decent one. I don’t think we capitalised on the middle overs with the spin, but whatever we have on the board we have to defend it.

“It’s great to have Akeal back to control that powerplay. We’re just trying to find the correct roles for everyone to play in every conditions. We’re shaping up pretty nicely.

“I think we need to limit as many dot balls as we can, score off more deliveries, our dot percentage needs to fall. We’ve got to run it hard, keep that percentage down, as long as we do that we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.

“We have to try and bounce back, win the game and finish the tour strong, setting the tone as a team.”

‘The mood seems very good’

Player of the match Luke Wood speaking to Test Match Special: “It’s my first game in an England shirt for a year and half. I’m just trying to make my mark when you get a chance to do so, it was nice to get a run out and nice to win a game.”

On the swinging ball: “I’ve said it before, it’s my forte, probably what I’m best known for. I had a good time in Pakistan recently, I’m coming out with good confidence.

“First game back, a wicket always settles you down a bit. A bit of nerves, but I enjoyed it. They didn’t announce the team until we got here today, anticipation is more nerve-wracking, when you get on the field it’s OK.

“The mood always seems very good. We know this ground is quite hard to defend on, so we felt it’s a good toss to win. You saw with Rash at the end, even mine to an extent, you’re only two overs away from 50 runs and the cost to the game is massive. It’s not always easy, but it’s good to win.

“Harry Brook’s been very good so far, always thinks of his feet, very proactive.”
