Public Advisory: Important Notice Regarding Services During Postal Disruption

The Provincial Government is closely monitoring the current labour situation at Canada Post and its impact on residents of Newfoundland and Labrador.

If you receive benefit payments via cheque from the Provincial Government, please contact the applicable government department or agency to find out how you can continue to receive these payments without disruption.

Income Support

Individuals in receipt of Income Support payments via cheque can call 1-877-729-7888 for assistance.

Employment Services

For enquiries about employment services, please phone 1-800-563-6600 or email EmploymentPrograms@gov.nl.ca.

Residential Tenancies

Nearly all Residential Tenancies applications are submitted by email, fax, or in-person and mediation is done via email or phone. Most hearings are done via teleconference and are not affected by the postal disruption. Any resulting orders can be issued in-person, via email, or sent by courier, if needed.

Vital Statistics

The Vital Statistics Division continues to receive applications online. These are being processed and held on file and customers may pick up documents at the Vital Statistics office on Smallwood Drive in Mount Pearl.

If someone outside St. John’s and the surrounding areas needs their certificate immediately, the Vital Statistics Office will arrange a courier. It is recommended that customers contact Vital Statistics in advance to make arrangements if they choose to have someone pick up their documents on their behalf, as consent may be required.

Customers may contact Vital Statistics by phone at 709-729-3308 or via email at vstats@gov.nl.ca if they have questions.

Motor Registration

In-person counter service remains available, and many Motor Registration services are also available online on MyGovNL.

While the postal disruption is ongoing, receipts for driver’s licence and registration renewals, which can be presented in lieu of official documents while waiting for them to arrive by mail, are now valid for 60 days, instead of 30 days.

In such cases, motorists are reminded to keep a copy of their temporary documents or receipts along with insurance information (where applicable) in their vehicle.

Residents are reminded that they can download a digital copy of their documents or print a copy at home or through a local printing service.

Clients may contact Motor Registration Division by phone at 1-877-636-6867 or email at MRD@gov.nl.ca if they have questions.

Post-Secondary

Post-secondary students accessing the Student Aid Program should expect minimal impact due to the Canada Post labour dispute. Students should continue to utilize existing electronic channels for submitting any required documentation. Students can continue to send documents to studentaidmailbox@gov.nl.ca.

For any enquiries, post-secondary students can call 709-729-5849 or toll-free 1-888-657-0800, email studentaidenquiry@gov.nl.ca or visit the Student Aid Office in Coughlan College, 216 Prince Philip Drive, St. John’s Campus, Memorial University.

Supplier form

Additionally, we are encouraging any vendors still receiving payments via cheques to transition to direct deposit, if possible. Supplier Form – Treasury Board Secretariat
