Richard H. Cohn Sr., founder and chairman of Cohn Corp., has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, by Gov. Henry McMaster.
The recognition was presented during a Sept. 4 ceremony to acknowledge Cohn’s lifetime of service, leadership and lasting contributions to the state of South Carolina.
The Order of the Palmetto, established in 1971 by Gov. John C. West, is reserved for citizens whose lives are distinguished by extraordinary achievement, service and dedication to improving the lives of others across the state, according to a news release.
For more than 50 years, Cohn has united professional excellence with a strong commitment to civic service, according to the release. Cohn has constructed more than 15 million square feet through his first company, Cohn Construction, which he founded in 1993. Today, in addition to construction, the organization includes development, property and asset management.
Cohn’s impact extends well beyond business, the release stated. He currently serves as chairman-at-large of South Carolina ETV and has held leadership roles with the city of Columbia Planning Commission, South Carolina Philharmonic, Congaree Vista Guild, City Center Partnership, and as president of the Tree of Life Congregation. Alongside his wife, Debbie, he has supported Columbia’s arts community, most notably through the Richard and Debbie Cohn Side Door Theatre. He was awarded the Palmetto Patriot Award in 2011.
“Richard Cohn has spent his life building opportunities, strengthening communities, and enriching our state’s culture,” McMaster said in the release. His leadership and generosity reflect the very best of South Carolina. I have come to know Richard as not only a successful businessman, but also a dedicated community leader, and it is a privilege to present him with the Order of the Palmetto.”
Cohn said it was a privilege to do the things that earned him the award.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Order of the Palmetto,” he said in the release. “South Carolina has given me, my family, and my company so much, and it has been my privilege to give back through my work and service,” Cohn said in the release. “This award is a reflection of the many people, organizations, and communities I’ve had the honor of working with over the years, and I am grateful to continue contributing to the future of our state.”
