Asian Athletics Championships 2025, Medals Tally: India back in second place with five golds after third day

India moved back to second place in the medals tally on the third day of the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, Korea.

Asian Athletics Championships 2025: Indian women win 4x400m relay gold, men clinch silver

Indian women’s 4x400m relay team clinched the gold medal while the men took silver at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, Korea, on Thursday.

India achieves a 2-3 in women’s long jump as Ancy Sojan (6.33m) grabs silver medal while Shaili Singh (6.30m) wins bronze.

Ancy’s last jump was a foul while Shaili’s final attempt – 5.99m – was also her worst.

Gold medal goes to Reihaneh Mobini Arani (6.40m) of Iran, a first-ever for the country in this event.

Nandini Agasara tops the sheet in 200m and maintains her lead at the end of four events in Heptathlon.

Nandini Agasara (India) – 3,610 points

Liu Jingyi (China) – 3,412 points

Cai Juan Chen (Chinese Taipei) – 3,410 points

The remaining three events – long jump, javelin throw and 800m – will take place tomorrow.

Indian quartet of Jay Kumar, Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil Saji and Vishal TK looks to claim country’s first gold in this event since 2023.

Strong start from Jay running in fifth lane. India is fourth as he passes the baton to Dharmveer.

Dharmveer overtakes the Sri Lankan athlete to move into the bronze medal position as he gives the baton to Manu.

Manu keeps India in third place as he passes the baton to Vishal for the anchor leg.

Vishal chases the athletes from China and Qatar and somehow manages to overtake the former to clinch silver for India. Qatar wins the gold medal for only the third time in the history of the competition.

Gold – Qatar (3:03.52s)

Silver – India (3:03.67s)

Bronze – China (3:03.73s)

No change in positions for Ancy (second) and Shaili (third) as they come up with jumps of 6.16m and 6.09m, respectively in the fifth round.

Sarvesh Kushare misses out on a podium-finish as he fails to clear the bar set at 2.23m height while four jumpers manage to do it.

Jisna Mathew is running the first leg and India is fourth as she passes the baton to Rupal.

A superb start from Rupal as she overtakes the Vietnamese athlete and keeps India ahead as she passes the baton to Kunja Rajitha.

Vietnamese athlete overtakes Kunja Rajitha but the gap is not too big as both countries begin the anchor leg.

Out of nowhere, Sri Lanka takes the lead but Subha reclaims it as she enters the home stretch to seal another gold for India!

India wins gold in women’s 4x400m relay at the Asian Championships after 12 years!

India wins gold with a timing of 3:34.18s which is a new Season Best for the team, Vietnam takes silver with 3:34.77s while Sri Lanka bags the bronze with 3:36.67s.

Ancy and Shaili both come up with identical jumps – 6.17m – in the fourth round and stay in second and third place, respectively.

Indian quartet of Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Kunja Rajitha and Subha Venkatesan is competing in the 4x400m hurdles relay event, which is a direct final.

India has not won the gold in this event since 2013.

Samardeep Singh Gill finishes sixth as his last throw is also a foul.

His best attempt of 19.25m came in the third round.

Mohammadreza Tayebiseifkoti of Iran takes the gold with 20.32m, China’s Xing Jialiang takes silver with 19.97m while Mohammed Daoud B Tolu of Saudi Arabia gets bronze with 19.92m.

Shaili and Ancy both safely stay in Top 8 as the last four jumpers have been eliminated from the competition after three rounds.

However, Ancy has overtaken Shaili for second spot with a jump of 6.33m. For Shaili, her opening jump of 6.30m is still her best.

Sarvesh clears both 2.15m and 2.19m heights in his second attempts to stay alive in the competition.

Asian Athletics Championships 2025: Jyothi Yarraji defends 100m hurdles gold, sets new competition record

Jyothi Yarraji defended her gold medal in women’s 100m hurdles at the Asian Athletics Championships on Thursday as she set a new competition record.

Top 8 get three extra throws.

Samardeep commits two straight fouls and slips to sixth with one round to go.

Indian national record holder and defending champion Jyothi Yarraji in action in the women’s 100m hurdles final.

Jyothi seemed to be trailing for the most part before a late burst helped her clinch her second straight gold medal at the Asian Championships, with a new Competition Record of 12.96s!

Shaili and Ancy continue to be second and third, respectively after two jumps. Neither manages to improve their first-round efforts.

Reihaneh Mobini Arani of Iran leads with 6.40m.

Sarvesh Kushare fails to clear 2.15m in his first attempt. He has two more chances.

Samardeep Singh’s second throw is 17.86m, which is not better than his opening effort of 18.76m. He has slipped from fourth to fifth after second round.

However, the Indian comes up with a huge improvement – 19.25m throw in the third round. He has moved up from fifth to fourth.

After the first round in women’s long jump final, Shaili Singh is second with 6.30m while Ancy Sojan is third with 6.29m. Iran’s Reihaneh Mobini Arani leads with 6.36m.

Sarvesh Kushare begins the men’s high jump by clearing the bar set at 2.10m in his first attempt.

With an opening effort of 18.76m, India’s Samardeep Singh Gill is fourth in men’s shot put final after the first round.

Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Daoud B Tolu leads with 19.65m while Iran’s Mohammadreza Tayebiseifkoti is second with 19.21m.

Bahrain’s Abdelrahman Mahmoud is third with 19.01m.

Asian Athletics Championships 2025: Avinash Sable wins men’s 3000m steeplechase gold – India’s first since 1989

National record holder Avinash Sable became the first Indian man in 36 years to win a gold medal in 3000m steeplechase at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, Korea, on Thursday.

Avinash Sable is third with six more laps to go. The Indian seems unperturbed with the slow pace. The Indian takes the lead midway through the second lap.

Sable continues to stay ahead with four laps to go but he has two Japanese athletes following him closely.

Three laps remaining and Japan’s Yutaro Niinae has overtaken Sable.

Two more laps to go and Sable is placed second.

Final lap begins and Sable is still trailing Niinae.

Now, Sable picks up pace and overtakes the Japanese athlete just before the first hurdle. Nobody seems to have the speed to catch the Indian anymore. Sable completes the water jump and races to the finish line to clinch the gold easily!

Time for the men’s 3000m steeplechase finalists to enter the stadium.

India’s Avinash Sable is a big favourite for the gold medal. No Indian man has won a gold medal in this event in the last 36 years. Can Sable make history today?

The finalists for women’s long jump are being introduced.

“The competition is currently delayed due to adverse weather conditions,” say the organisers in an official statement.

According to AccuWeather, it is 17 degrees Celsius in Gumi with wind gusts of 15km/h.

The evening session was supposed to start at 4:05PM IST but no live action so far. Stay tuned for further updates.

In the morning session, Nandini Agasara emerged as the leader in Heptathlon after three events.

Women’s 10,000m final, which was stopped yesterday due to adverse weather conditions, was held from beginning. Sanjivani Baburao Jadhav finished fifth, clocking a season’s best of 33:08.17s while Seema took the sixth spot with 33:08.23s.

In men’s 4x400m relay heats, Indian quartet of Rince Joseph, Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil Saji and Mohit Kumar was the leader amongst the nine teams with a timing of 3:06.28s.
