Area for Potato Cultivation in The Netherlands reaches New Heights in 2025

In 2025, over 83 thousand hectares of ware potatoes will be grown. This is 8.6 percent more than last year. The last time the cultivation area of ​​ware potatoes exceeded 80 thousand hectares was in 2000. This is evident from the provisional results of the 2025 agricultural census of Statistics Netherlands.

The total arable farming area, also known as the area, has increased by 3.1 percent in 2025 compared to the previous year to almost 547 thousand hectares. This is again comparable to the area of ​​2023.

The area of ​​potatoes amounts to more than 164 thousand hectares. The area of ​​consumption potatoes in particular increased (8.6 percent). But seed (5.9 percent) and starch potatoes (1.9 percent) are also grown more often.

Share of consumption potatoes is growing

Of all potatoes grown in the Netherlands, the share of starch potatoes is decreasing and the share of consumption potatoes is increasing. At present, less than a quarter of potatoes are starch potatoes. This fluctuated around 30 percent for years. Half of all potatoes are grown for consumption, the remaining quarter is for seed potatoes.
